It’s something you haven’t been able to do for some time… Bring your car up to the highest point in Shawnee County.
But with the help of a gift from Azura Credit Union, Shawnee County Parks and Recreation will open the gate to allow foot and vehicle traffic on to Skyline Park’s most interesting feature on June 2 – National Trails Day.
Skyline Park, home of Burnett’s Mound, is the highest point in Shawnee County and offers the most panoramic views of the city and county. The gift from Azura Credit Union has brought about improvements to the park including the addition of a trail map and trail markers to guide hikers, runners and mountain bikers through the 4.47 miles of trails in the park.
The gate will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. for one day only, this Saturday, June 2, so make sure you bring the family out for what could be a once in a lifetime experience. The gate to Burnett’s Point has been locked and closed in recent years due to security concerns and vandals dumping junk in the area.
Shawnee County Parks and Recreation’s Mobile Recreation Unit will be at the top parking lot just below the mound from 10 a.m. to noon that day with information on some of Skyline Park’s features and a sneak peek of an upcoming guided tour of the park’s restored prairie.
